The J24 class has been represented at Bermuda International Race Week since 1983, but it was the early 1990’s when the class really saw a big upturn. This can almost solely be attributed to one man, Jonathan Custance Baker, who helped revive the fleet and promote regular sailing. The J24 fleet is now Bermuda’s most successful One Design Fleet, with nineteen boats and more than one hundred active members. Sailing takes place twice a week during the nine-month long season, on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays during the day. The J24 class is also at the vanguard as far as sponsorship is concerned, with Wednesday night sailing attracting two major local sponsors. Many of the local skippers also receive sponsorship for Saturday sailing as well. The local fleet of boats is in good condition, and the local crews are encouraged through the organizing of J World training weekends on island, and sponsorship of crews if they attend overseas regattas. All of the local fleet action is well publicized on the Bermuda J24 website at http://www.j24.bm.
