Oh, to be Consistent !

Saturday, April 30th, 2005 by sadiiqi

Finally a consistent breeze - 10-15 out of the NE allowed Jay to set a course in the middle of the Sound - no shores to contend with.
Race 1 started at 10am - bleary eyed crew, just in from last nights session at Docksiders bar, hauled up jibs and away we went. After two laps - Trevor finished behind Todd, with Tony taking his second bullet. A mixed bag following really messed up the results for the mid-fleet boats - all to play for in the last race.
The last race had Tony doing turns on the start line and Erin bailing early right. The bulk of the fleet charged left, then the fleet split into the sides, with a few brave souls trying the middle. Left paid more than right, with boats far right getting pinwheeled mercilessly.
Down to the finish after 2 laps, the fighting Canadians from Nova Scotia scored their third win of the week, followed by an excellent recovery from Tony and then Trevor having a consistently good day.
Tony Parker takes the Gripper Trophy for a fine win, followed by locals Todd Olsen (2nd) and a rapidly climbing Trevor (3rd).
All 12 boats collected the customary Hagen-Daz from the crash boat on the way in much to the puzzlement of the newcomers to Race Week). Prize-giving, dinner and dancing to follow tonight.
Thanks to the committee for 10 months of work; the owners for loaning their boats; and the visitors for braving the dock party, mopeds, and wild conditions. A great week!!

It was as pointless as sending Nova Scotians to dancing lessons…..

Sailors are used to delays (bar opening times, court appearances, etc.) so the initial 2 hour delay whilst the Great Sound was refilled from above didn’t have too many grumbles despite the bar not being open. I mean what sort of astute business brain does it take to work out that 150 sailors trapped by a Noah sized deluge for at least 2 hours in a bar might possibly equal staggering bar profits?
On to the racing. Boats made it out to the newly refilled race course for a 2pm start, which was difficult as the wind had been out on the town last night and was a bit slow and staggery. Anyway shortly after 2:15 the 105’s started their race, and all eyes eagerly awaited who would cross who at the top of the mark - would the Somerset shore pay off? Etchells next then J’s began to get ready. As the breeze started to increase a little some boats changed the rigs up from the 5 knot setting to the 10 knot one (a wise choice), others didn’t. The start was won convincingly by Sean and crew - they stormed quickly left (in not much breeze) with most of the pack hot on their heels. Stuart had a poor boat end start, tacked away onto a horrendous header, which every so slooooowly turned into a golden lift. The lefties paid the price of hanging on too long, save for Mayhem who started picking up places as the worked their way back right. At the top mark Stuart led Mike and Todd round, with Tony playing catch up behind.
The first run turned into a reach, then a run again, with the breeze now picking up nicely. Still genoas everywhere though.
Next leg had most of the 105’s and many of the E22’s heading to a red mark, and the rest to the yellow. No C flag for us so yellow it was. The squall then arrived unannounced, without as much as a “good afternoon”. Sean and Stuart were hesitant about showing their keels, the rest of the fleet wasn’t so coy - there were bottoms everywhere. A scary bunch of E22s tried to fly chutes and were well out of control - not pretty. The beat quickly turned into a 35 knot reach with genoas up, followed by a reach to the finish.
The R/C ignored the boats crossing and the N flag said it all.
Stuart was the first non-finisher with Erin and Mayhem in hot pursuit. Back to the dock to moan about the N flag etc etc, have some beers, increase the strength of the wind and hoist wet underwear up the mast to dry (classy move guys!).
Tomorrow is another day…..

Rainy Monday

After getting soaked riding to the yacht club, the day brightened up and the wind started blowing. Out on the racecourse there was a bunch of dithering - jib or genny. Many tried both and the concensus seemed to be jib, although the top of the course, for races 2 and 3, under Fort Scaur, was very light and shifty. It was a long hard day - with large shifts, a delay whilst the wind swung thjrough 70 degrees, the light conditions at the top of the course, and three races to boot. Results were:
Race 1 - Todd Olson, Tony Parker, Trevor Boyce. Race 1 also saw spoRHADiC’s mast fold at the spreaders when a pin sheared (big oops).
Race 2 - Tony Parker, Stuart Jardine, Trevor Boyce.
Race 3 - Sean McDermott, Tony Parker, John Nicholls.
So after 6 races, Tony Parker and crew lead after posting consistent results.

I’d like a Bacardi please

Well the crews have all finally made it, and 12 race prepared J/24s are lined up at the RBYC dock ready for a week of action. Masts have now been either bent or straightened, and in some cases been put back where they started from. New halyards for the visting boats have been stretched; and the sound of spanky new sails has been heard around the dock.
Little carnage to report so far - but its early days yet!!!
